hamlet of Campodolcino, Starleggia seems to derive its name from the dialect "Sterl" as early as 1200 up there 'is only to graze the animals infertile, meaning "sterlamenta. Frazione del comune di Campodolcino, dal quale dista però quasi dieci chilometri, Motta di Sotto si trova in quel territorio della provincia di Sondrio che comprende anche la non distante Madesimo, apparentemente incuneato all'interno della confinante Svizzera. Di Campodolcino Motta sembra una estrema propaggine settentrionale; arroccata a piu' di 1700 metri di altezza, sul pianoro omonimo, dotata di moderne infrastrutture di tipo ricettivo-alberghiero e attrezzata per la pratica degli sport invernali con gli svariati chilometri ski station of Alpe Motta, is now linked to its capital by an underground funicular, the SkyEspress. A huge statue of over 13 meters high, designed by Giles Casagrande, stands out on this tiny town, the statue is part of a massive outdoor shrine, the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe, which rises about 2000 meters high.
